Equipment

  • 1 Large pot For melting butter and marshmallows
  • 1 Rubber spatula Buttered, for stirring and pressing
  • 1 9x13-inch baking pan Lined with parchment paper
  • 1 Parchment paper For easy removal and cutting
  • 1 Measuring Cups For cereal and marshmallows
  • 1 Measuring Spoons For butter and vanilla
  • 1optional Microwave-safe bowl Alternative to stovetop melting method
  • 1 optional Piping bag or spoon For drizzling melted chocolate on top

Ingredients

  • 6 cup crispy rice cereal
  • 4 cup mini marshmallows plus extra for topping
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract optional
  • 1 pinch salt optional, balances sweetness
  • 1 cup orange candy melts for decorating
  • 1 cup black candy melts for decorating
  • 2 tbsp Halloween sprinkles optional
  • 8 piece candy eyes optional, for ghost/spider designs
  • 6 piece pretzel sticks optional, for spider legs

Instructions

  • Melt the butter in a large pot over low heat, stirring occasionally until fully liquid.
  • Add the mini marshmallows to the pot and stir constantly until melted and smooth. Remove from heat just before fully melted — the residual heat will finish melting them without scorching.
  • Stir in the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt until well combined.
  • Add the crispy rice cereal to the pot and gently fold it into the marshmallow mixture until evenly coated.
  • Line a 9x13-inch baking pan with parchment paper, then transfer the mixture into the pan.
  • Using a buttered spatula or lightly buttered hands, press the mixture into the pan gently avoid pressing too firmly, or the treats will turn out dense and hard.
  • Let the pan cool at room temperature for 30 minutes before cutting.
  • Cut the cooled rice krispie treats into squares or use cookie cutters for festive Halloween shapes like pumpkins and ghosts.
  • Melt the orange and black candy melts separately in the microwave, stirring every 20 seconds until smooth.
  • Dip or drizzle the shaped treats in the melted candy melts, then decorate with candy eyes, pretzel legs, or sprinkles before the coating sets.
